Dental Implant Procedure
The ideal candidate for implants has good bone density in his or her jaw, has no signs of gum disease, and is in generally good dental health. If you have poor bone density, all is not lost! Dr. Kaplansky may recommend bone grafting, which can be done right here at our office in a separate surgery prior to implant surgery. Any gum disease should also be treated to prepare you for implant surgery. Placing an implant in a site that is healthy and free of infection will yield the best results.
A treatment plan for successfully placing your dental implants will be designed just for you. During surgery, a titanium base will be placed in the bone of your jaw. The bone will support it and eventually heal around the metal in a process called osseointegration. This healing period typically takes a few months, after which a lifelike crown designed to blend in perfectly with your natural teeth will be attached to the base using an abutment (attachment) piece.
Unlike other tooth replacement options, dental implants can help prevent bone loss. The titanium base of the implant stimulates the bone tissue to generate healthy cells in much the same way that your natural tooth roots do. Another advantage of dental implants is that they will not slip or slide in your mouth like a denture.
Mini implants are similar to regular dental implants except that they are smaller in diameter. This may be a good option if you don’t have quite enough bone remaining in the jaw to support a traditional implant. Mini implants are strong and durable and offer many of the same benefits as traditional dental implants. Advantages of mini implants include a shorter amount of time spent in surgery and faster recovery times.
