Preventive Care in Gasport, NY

Your mother probably told you when you were young that too much candy would rot your teeth. Well, she was mostly right! Bacteria that occur naturally in our mouths feed off of food particles – and sugar is their favorite food. They then create acidic waste products that wear away at your enamel.

Preventing decay is important because advanced decay could lead to an abscessed tooth or even tooth loss. Good prevention practices take place both at home and in our dental office, which is located near Middleport, Medina, and Lockport in western New York.

During your biannual dentist appointment, Dr. Igor Kaplansky will give you a gentle, thorough exam, and our experienced team will clean your teeth to remove hard-to-reach plaque and tartar. A professional teeth cleaning will leave you feeling refreshed and can even help make your teeth look whiter.

While brushing and flossing go a long way toward preventing tooth decay, a sealant may be able to help further protect your teeth. At Dentistry by Dr. Kaplansky, we offer sealant services that will keep your teeth healthy and looking great.

Sealants

A dental sealant is a coating made of thin plastic that is applied to the deep grooves in the chewing surface of your teeth. To apply the sealants, your teeth will first be cleaned of any traces of plaque or tartar and then dried off. Then, Dr. Kaplansky will “paint” the sealant onto the surface of your tooth.

The sealant works itself into the grooves in your teeth and covers them to form a protective barrier. This barrier prevents bacteria’s acidic wastes from reaching the surface of your tooth. Sealants are helpful in preventing tooth decay in your back teeth and molars, a common place for cavities to occur.

We often recommend sealants for children to protect their vulnerable teeth from decay, but sealants may also be appropriate in adults who are particularly prone to cavities.

Whitening

Protecting your teeth and keeping them healthy is our top priority – but we also want you to love how your smile looks! We offer the Kor Whitening system, which eliminates even deep-set stains.

The secret behind Kor Whitening is that it encourages the teeth to absorb oxygen, bleaching away even stubborn stains. Dr. Kaplansky may also recommend that you take home a set of custom-made Kor Whitening trays and a whitening gel chosen specifically for you. Periodic at-home care will keep your smile bright and beautiful.
