Traditional Braces in Gasport, NY

If you’re an adult with a few misaligned teeth, you may feel that you’ve been getting along just fine and having them fixed isn’t worth the effort and expense. However, aside from the esthetic benefits, there are other reasons why straightening teeth, even as an adult, can be a worthwhile investment. Traditional orthodontics at Dentistry by Dr. Kaplansky not only enhances your appearance but may also improve your long-term oral health.

Properly aligned teeth are more likely to function as they should. If your teeth aren’t aligned properly, you may still be able to speak, smile, and chew, but you’ll put more stress on both the teeth and the jaws, leading to premature wearing of your teeth. Realigning your teeth with traditional orthodontics returns your teeth to a more normal position and reduces your risk of dental erosion and other functional problems.

Traditional Braces for Children

Why do braces seem to be a part of growing up for so many kids? The answer is that they produce excellent results and can head off more serious oral health problems in the future.

Traditional braces apply gentle pressure to the teeth with a thin, flexible wire called an archwire. The archwire is attached to your teeth with a ceramic or metal bracket, and exerts a light force, causing teeth to gradually move into a better position. Sometimes, we may use elastic bands or other appliances when additional force is needed.

Are traditional orthodontics the right choice for your child? The first step is to arrange an appointment for an orthodontic evaluation at our Gasport dental office. We recommend that your child be evaluated no later than age seven.

At this age, the first molars have usually emerged, and your child's bite pattern is being formed. We may not begin treatment for several years, but it’s always best to understand what problems can arise so we can plan your child’s future treatment accordingly.

We Give You Options

If you’re thinking about braces, you or your older child may be worried that a mouth full of silver metal braces will look obvious and make you feel self-conscious. But what if you don’t need metal braces at all?

Some people can get good results using a system of clear plastic aligners like Invisalign. The aligners are nearly invisible so they’re very discreet, and most people won’t even know you’re wearing them. You wear the aligners throughout the day and while you sleep, but they can be removed for eating and oral hygiene. Invisalign works best for correcting mild to moderate alignment issues.
