What to do When You Feel Oral Pain

There are a lot of over the counter remedies to help suppress oral pain, but it is important that if you are experiencing pain you see your dentist. Most of the time, the pain you are experiencing is due to dental concerns such as cavities, tooth decay, gingivitis, or sensitivity. If ignored, or only treat the symptoms, it may result in unrepairable damage to your teeth and gums.

Types of Dental Pain

Jaw pain – Some people can have jaw pain from high amounts of stress, but it can also be caused by Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ). TMJ can cause the jaw to pop when you chew, moderate and severe pain, and headaches and most often can only be fixed with physical therapy, injections, and surgery.

Gum pain – When you are experiencing tenderness or inflammation in your gums it can be a sign of gum disease. Gum disease causes gums to recede and pull away from teeth and allows bacteria to grow. Left unchecked, gum disease can not only cause a lot of pain when brushing and flossing, but can also lead to tooth loss and bone loss. Gum pain can also be caused by wisdom teeth for those ages fifteen to twenty-two and will need to be removed.

Tooth pain – Tooth pain is often a sign of cavities and tooth decay. If caught quickly, cavities can be filled without further damage, but if a cavity isn’t filled, the decay can continue to cause damage to your tooth resulting in severe pain. The only way to stop the decay from spreading is with a root canal or to have the tooth extracted.

Sensitivity – Though sensitivity may be a sign of reduced enamel or cavities, it can often be treated with specialized toothpastes and fluoride treatments. Severe sensitivity may have to be treated with fillings and crowns if the pain is severe or disruptive to your day to day life.

What to do When You Have Oral Pain

Oral pain can be caused by a lot of different factors, so it is important to figure out what could be causing the pain. If the pain is severe or continues after a few days, it is a good sign there is something wrong and you should see your dentist as soon as possible. Getting cleanings and exams every six months will help you avoid most dental issues and the pain they cause.
