TMJ Mouth Guards in Gasport, NY

NTI – A Different Kind of Mouth Guard

If you have tension in your jaw while you sleep, you may be experiencing related problems during the day such as jaw pain and migraine headaches. Fortunately, at Dentistry by Dr. Kaplansky, we offer an effective, non-surgical solution to tension in the jaw – the NTI mouth guard. This mouth guard helps people who are struggling with TMJ, bruxism, and migraines – three interrelated conditions.

TMJ Disorder

The clenching in your jaw may be due to a disorder of your temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This is the hinge-like joint that connects your jaw bone and your skull. A TMJ disorder can cause pain in the joint and muscles of your jaw. The cause for an ailment like this may be hard to decipher, but it is sometimes associated with an injury to the jaw or arthritis.

Surgery is sometimes recommended for correcting an issue with the TMJ; however, we will do everything we can to help you avoid surgery.

Bruxism is also known as teeth grinding, or excessive jaw clenching. Symptoms of teeth grinding may include soreness in the jaw, a gradual wearing down of the enamel until teeth appear flattened, and headaches. You may experience teeth grinding at night while you sleep or even during the day.

If you’ve ever had a migraine, you know that this kind of headache can really ruin your day. A migraine is a very painful headache in which the sufferer may experience symptoms like light sensitivity, nausea, and vomiting. In many cases, the onset of a migraine may be a result of excessive pressure on the jaw or jaw clenching that leads to tension in the temples, which then irritates the nerves and leads to your headache.

A Non-Surgical Solution

If you suffer from any of these issues, Dr. Igor Kaplansky may recommend that you be fitted with an NTI. An NTI is a special type of mouth guard that slips over the two teeth at the very front of your mouth. This is the opposite of how other mouth-guards work. Traditional mouth-guards use a rubber or plastic material at the very back of the mouth for teeth to press down on so that your top teeth don’t rub against your bottom teeth. The forward-positioning of NTI spreads the upper and lower jaw apart so that they don’t come into contact at all. This helps to relieve jaw clenching.

Dr. Kaplansky can take molds and measurements of your teeth and order you a custom mouth guard. Because of its custom fit, NTI will rest comfortably in your mouth while you sleep.
