Invisalign is a discreet way to treat many problems that have traditionally been corrected by metal braces. They have given hope to many people who thought orthodontic treatment was too complicated or expensive.
We know that Invisalign is hardly noticeable to other people and that it can dramatically improve your smile by straightening your teeth...but what exactly is Invisalign and how does it work?
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign aligners are made of thermoplastic material and look similar to teeth-whitening trays. Each set of aligners is custom-made at an Invisalign lab using impressions we take of your mouth. The comfortable plastic aligners are safe, discreet and, of course, FDA approved.
The advanced 3-D modeling that the Invisalign lab uses allows the lab to create around 20-30 sets of custom-to-you aligners. Over the course of a year (sometimes more, sometimes less) these sets of aligners will bring your teeth closer and closer to perfection.
What Problems Does Invisalign Fix?
Invisalign clear aligners can dramatically change your appearance, but they are not just cosmetic. We can use Invisalign to discreetly correct serious alignment and bite problems.
Crowded teeth are caused when either there are too many teeth in the mouth or the jaw is not large enough to fit all of the teeth, causing them to push up too close to one another.
Crowded teeth often move sideways, making them prone to excess force. This pressure leads to wearing of your teeth as well as hygiene problems since it’s difficult to floss properly.
Another common issue is spacing, or gaps between teeth. When teeth are too far apart, they not only look unsightly, but they can result in hygiene issues and gum disease.
Crossbite occurs when one or more of your upper teeth bite behind your lower teeth instead of in front of them. This can result in premature wearing, jaw issues, and gum disease. Even if your teeth are fairly straight, you may experience pain because your upper and lower jaw are not aligned properly
If your upper front teeth sit in front of your lower teeth, you have an overbite. This is a problem because it can cause jaw problems and wear on the bottom teeth.
How Does Invisalign Treatment Work?
You’ll wear your aligners throughout the day, taking them out for eating or drinking. Because the Invisalign aligners are clear and fit the shape of your teeth, most people will never notice you’re wearing them. You’ll visit our Gasport dental office every six weeks or so for a checkup and for new aligners.
Because Invisalign treatment gradually moves your teeth into place, you won’t notice the difference day to day. One day, though, you’ll look in the mirror and realize that your smile is looking pretty good.
To keep your teeth in place and looking great forever, after your last set of Invisalign aligners we’ll help you decide on a retainer. Depending on your situation, we may decide to go with comfortable removable retainers you’ll wear at night or discreet permanent retainers such as a wire behind some teeth.
Invisalign clear aligners are effective for adults of all ages and can fix a variety of orthodontic problems. Please call our Gasport dental office, and we’ll make an appointment for a complimentary consultation to discuss Invisalign as well as the other treatments we offer.
