Do you feel as though your top and bottom teeth do not fit together comfortably? Ideally, your top teeth should rest perfectly over your bottom teeth. If this is not the case, you may have a malocclusion.
What is a Malocclusion?
A malocclusion is a misalignment of bite. There are three main types of malocclusion:
- Overbite – An overbite is characterized by the teeth in the upper jaw significantly overlap the teeth of the lower jaw
- Underbite – If the teeth in your lower jaw protrude past the teeth in the upper jaw, you may have an underbite
- Crossbite – A crossbite is an irregular bite characterized by one or more teeth that overlap where they are not supposed to
If you have a malocclusion, you may experience a wide range of symptoms. Among potential symptoms are:
- Discomfort of the jaw
- Distortion of the facial appearance
- Crooked or misaligned teeth
- Problems with speech such as lisping
These symptoms can be distressing and painful. A lisp or altered appearance may make you feel anxious about how you appear to others. Plus, your malocclusion could also be detrimental to your health. Crooked or twisted teeth can result in difficulty brushing and flossing. It may also cause uneven wearing on teeth or excessive pressure on the jaw.
If you have experienced any of the symptoms of malocclusion, schedule a consultation at our Gasport dental office. After an examination and possibly dental x-rays, Dr. Kaplansky will be able to determine if you have a problem with your bite.
We offer both traditional orthodontic treatment and the Invisalign treatment system. Both methods gently adjust the position of your teeth to correct your smile, and each comes with its own advantages.
Traditional braces very effectively use wires and brackets to gradually straighten teeth. With traditional gear, your braces will be adjusted periodically according to your personal orthodontic plan.
Invisalign uses clear aligner trays to reposition teeth. Invisalign leads to great results in about the same length of time as traditional braces. The clear aligners are very discreet in appearance and can be removed for thorough brushing and flossing.
During your consultation, you can discuss your orthodontic concerns and goals with Dr. Kaplansky. That way, he’ll be able to advise you as to which method is best for your situation.
