Most of us have seen people with braces, but if you are facing the prospect of getting traditional braces, you might not know the steps involved in the process of applying braces. It’s a fairly straightforward procedure, and we’ll cover the steps below.

Step 1: The Initial consultation

Before your braces are applied, your dentist will want to do an evaluation of your mouth to determine a number of things, including what type of orthodontic treatment you might need. Your dentist will also be able to determine approximately how long treatment will take. He or she will likely take a full set of x-rays at this appointment as well.

Step 2: The initial bonding

Before the initial bonding can take place, you will have to make sure that you are not only cavity free but that you have had a teeth cleaning in the past six months. Then, when it is time for the initial bonding, your dentist will put brackets on your teeth as well as spacers. The spacers are what makes room for the bands portion of the braces.

Step 3: The banding

If you need to have any teeth pulled, this will have to be taken care of before the banding, or wire, can be placed. This appointment usually takes place a week or two after the initial bonding visit. Your doctor will remove the spacers and place the bands at this appointment.

Step 4: The adjustment visit

After you have the banding in place, you will have an adjustment visit—usually every four weeks. This will more than likely be the only kind of appointment you’ll need for the duration of the process, until it’s time to have the braces removed. Each adjustment appointment will take about a half-hour.
