How much do you think you know about dental implants?

Researchers from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) set out to determine how much people know and understand about dental implants. They interviewed two groups of patients being treated at the VCU School of Dentistry’s dental clinic – the first group was comprised of patients who were at the clinic for implant treatment; the second group was visiting for other general services.

The results showed that about 25% of the patients receiving general care had never heard of implants. Clearly, we have a lot of work to do in educating patients and making them aware of dental implants as a tooth replacement!

A Few Dental Implant Facts

If you don’t know much about implants, here are a few important points you should be aware of:

  • A dental implant is a permanent replacement root that is placed in your jaw and allowed to heal.
  • The replacement root of an implant is a tiny post made of titanium, a material that is readily accepted by the body.
  • Healing takes about six months, and during that time, the implant integrates fully with surrounding bone and tissue and becomes a permanent part of your dental anatomy.
  • When healing is complete, your dentist attaches a restoration. This is the visible part of the implant that restores function and completes your smile.

When the entire process is finished, you will have a beautiful, permanent new tooth that blends perfectly and allows you to eat, speak, and smile with confidence!
