Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How can we help you?

When it comes to your health, there’s no such thing as a silly question! Below are a few of our frequently asked questions. Feel free to call our office at 716-772-7500 and we’ll be happy to answer any other questions you may have.

Other

If you’re lucky enough to have avoided dental emergencies up to this point, you might not have a clear understanding of what qualifies as a dental emergency.

It’s helpful to think of a dental emergency as an event or injury that immediately and unexpectedly alters your smile or puts your oral health at risk.

Common dental emergency scenarios include:

  • Breaking a tooth on a piece of hard food
  • Losing a dental restoration in a sticky or chewy candy
  • Hitting your mouth during an auto accident
  • Getting hit in the face with a ball, puck, frisbee, or fist during a sporting event
  • Falling and hitting your mouth on concrete or ice

At Dentistry by Dr. Kaplansky, we commonly treat dental emergencies in Lockport, NY. Some of the injuries we see most regularly include:

  • Chipped teeth
  • Knocked-out or loose teeth
  • Infected or abscessed teeth
  • Fractured or broken teeth
  • Lacerations on the lips, tongue, or cheeks
  • Gums that are bleeding significantly
  • Swelling and inflammation around the jaw, including in the neck
  • Painful toothaches

If you need to have an emergency dental appointment in Gasport, please call us any time of day at (716) 772-7500. We will work hard to relieve your pain and repair your injured teeth.

How can Dr. Kaplansky help your toothache?

If you have an after-hours dental emergency in Gasport, NY, you’ll need to get treatment right away.

At Dentistry by Dr. Kaplansky, we treat dental emergencies and urgent injuries no matter the time of day. You can call our dental office 24/7 at (716) 772-7500 if you need to schedule an emergency dental appointment.

When you have an emergency like a knocked-out tooth or broken dental restoration, it’s best to visit your Lockport emergency dentist rather than heading for the hospital. Most emergency rooms aren’t designed to handle dental procedures and won’t have the necessary tools or materials on hand to perform your treatment.

You should only go straight to the emergency room if you have a broken jaw or if you believe you’re experiencing a life-threatening emergency or infection.

We know that your dental emergency likely won’t happen when it’s convenient for you or when you’re expecting them, which is why we offer emergency dental appointments after hours and on the weekends if you need them. The best thing to do is call our dental office at (716) 772-7500 so that a member of our treatment team can get the details about what happened.

Some dental emergencies require treatment within minutes, while others can wait a few hours or even until the next morning, depending on their severity. We will always schedule your appointment when it is appropriate and best for your smile.

We don't make you wait.

We strive to see you immediately when you arrive. When the average waiting time in US doctors’ offices is nearing 40 minutes, at Dentistry by Dr. Kaplansky we have the utmost respect for our patients’ time — and we don’t make them wait. Our average wait time is less than 10 minutes.

3D imaging for a 3D you.

Dr. Kaplansky was one of the first in Western New York to invest into a CBCT unit. It stands for Cone Beam Computed Tomography. You can think of it as a dental CAT scan. This machine produces amazingly accurate 1:1 images of teeth and jaws in 3D with a very low radiation exposure. We use it extensively for implant surgery planning, complicated extraction cases, as well as root canal treatments and orthodontics. Better imaging leads to better diagnosis and precision in planning that in turn leads to better treatment outcomes and much happier patients.

There is no upper age limitation. Dental implants or dental implant prosthetics (implant-supported dentures, for example) are a wonderful option for getting rid of loose dentures and restoring your smile to its original shape.

In our dental office, we offer both full-sized and mini implants and tailor treatment to each patient's needs and wants.

And ask a member of our team about our Zygoma dental implants, especially if you've been told you do not have sufficient bone for this tooth-replacement option. We also offer Teeth Now, which combines implant dentistry with prosthetics like bridges or dentures.

We transform smiles in all locations, including Gasport, Lockport, Terrys Corners, Wrights Corners, Carlisle Gardens, Hartland, and Highland Park.

In many cases, your Gasport, NY dentists, Drs. Kaplansky and Smith, can place your dental implants immediately following tooth extractions. In fact, our dentists prefer this method over delayed placement due to shorter healing times and lower risks of bone loss. However, if you have an infection, placement may need to wait.

If Dr. Kaplansky determines that immediate placement of your dental implant will provide the best long-term result for you, he will place it immediately after your tooth extraction.

The entire process starts with a thorough exam and conversation in our dental office. Your dentist wants to see if implants will work for your smile needs and talk to you more about your smile goals.

The process itself includes surgical implantation of a tooth root replacement. Your dentist always makes sure the implant site is numb and that you are comfortable before starting the process. When this step is complete, your dentist attaches a dental crown over your replacement root to give you a new tooth.

If you do not have immediate tooth placement, your dentist may opt to provide your new crown after the root has integrated with the bone; this usually takes several months.

The answer to this question depends on the number of implants placed and the complexity of your case. However, the average time to place a dental implant is under an hour.

How Does the Process Work?

Dr. Kaplansky uses modern technology such as Cone Beam Computer Tomography to visualize his patients’ anatomy, making surgery preparation easy and exact. He also pre-plans the surgery on a specialized computer program, creating very accurate computer-generated surgical guides. This intense preparation allows Dr. Kaplansky to safely and quickly place multiple implants in one session while minimizing the risk of complications and post-operative discomfort.

In our dental office, we use up-to-date technologies like those mentioned above to provide you with excellent dental care in a comfortable, friendly environment.

Our skilled dental team in Gasport, NY enjoys treating patients from surrounding areas, including Lockport, Terrys Corners, Wrights Corners, Carlisle Gardens, Hartland, and Highland Park.

When it comes to dental implant treatment timelines, it all depends on the quality and quantity of surrounding bone as well as your general health, in addition to other factors.older couple smiling | dental implant gasport ny

A “typical” single implant treatment takes approximately 3-4 months. After an implant is placed, your body starts growing bone around it, locking it in place. This is a slow process that occurs over about 16 weeks.

What’s the Difference Between Placing and Restoring an Implant?

The surgical procedure is the placement of the dental implant. During the restoration process, the abutment, which usually connects the implant to a dental crown, is put in place. After that, the dental crown is affixed to the abutment, completing the process.

In some cases, implants can be placed and restored all in one day, especially when placing multiple implants connected together to restore an entire arch of teeth. However, that is not always an option, and the implant process often requires some time and patience.

Healing Time for Dental Implants

To achieve the best results, we want to let your implant fully heal before the process is complete. Healing time can vary per patient. However, we can help you through the process to ensure that you keep your implant healthy and enjoy a strong, reliable tooth replacement.

Dental Implants and Mini-Implants in Gasport, NY

Since there are so many variables, it's best to come in for a consultation and let Dr. Kaplansky examine you and explain everything in detail, providing you with a treatment plan that's best suited for your particular situation.

Yes! Dental implants work well for those with diabetes, but diabetes must be controlled, or it can negatively impact the healing process. Before you undergo any treatment, we will consult with your family doctor to ensure dental implant technology is safe for you.

Types of Dental Implants

Today, dental implants are a very popular choice for tooth replacement. They are an excellent option for those who want an extremely strong and natural-looking permanent tooth replacement.

The Procedure for Dental Implants

The procedure’s first step includes placing the implant post into your jawline and letting it heal completely. This process can take around six weeks, and your dentist will consult with you on the best ways to care for your implant during that time. Once the implant heals, you can have a full dental crown placed. This allows you to have an implant that functions just like a normal tooth!

What Is the Best Age to Get Dental Implants?

Many of our patients ask if there is any age maximum or minimum for getting dental implants. The only limitation on age is that bone growth should be complete before placing the implant to ensure predictable results. Bone growth is usually completed by age 18 for men and 15 for women.

We create beautiful smiles with dental implants for patients in Gasport, NY, and surrounding communities, like Lockport, Terrys Corners, Wrights Corners, Carlisle Gardens, Hartland, and Highland Park.

Dental implants are a popular choice, mainly due to their durability and comfort and the material that we use for the implant.

Modern Dental Implants

Most modern dental implants are made of titanium because the body readily accepts it. This means that after we place your dental implant in your jaw, the bone and tissue will heal around it until it becomes firmly integrated with the jaw.

This process is known as osseointegration. It helps the dental implant form a strong foundation for your new smile. Once the implant is placed and fuses to the jaw bone, it can take a few months to fully heal. Titanium's biocompatible nature is one reason why orthopedic surgeons recognize it as the healthiest option for replacing joints.

Dental Crowns

The titanium portion makes up the dental implant post, which will be positioned surgically into your jawbone. Once the implant has fully healed and integrated into your jaw, we will design a full aesthetic dental crown that will restore your appearance and allow you to use the tooth again.

Today, dental crowns are typically made of porcelain or composite resin material. Both materials result in a very durable crown that can withstand normal chewing on your implant!

Dental implants are a permanent and reliable solution to tooth loss. If you are uncertain about getting dental implants, we would like to discuss all of their benefits with you so you have a clearer picture of how they can improve your smile.

There are several benefits of having dental implants, but here are just a few:

#1 They function like natural teeth.

Dental implants restore your ability to comfortably and effectively chew your food. Many patients can’t even tell the difference between normal teeth and dental implants; that’s how realistic they are! You can also brush and floss your dental implants just like you would your natural teeth.

#2 They help prevent bone loss.

Dental implants are placed in the jaw, and they naturally fuse to and stimulate the bone. This stimulation and additional support help prevent bone loss.

#3 They last for a very long time.

Dental implants typically last for the rest of a patient’s life!

Reclaim Your Smile with Dental Implants

Dental implants are designed to look, function, and feel just like natural teeth so you can enjoy your life without worrying about your smile. If you are ready to take your oral health to the next level, please talk to Dr. Kaplansky or Dr. Smith about getting dental implants in Gasport, NY.

We offer dental implants to patients from all surrounding areas, including Lockport, Terrys Corners, Wrights Corners, Carlisle Gardens, Hartland, and Highland Park.

Dental implants are not a recent innovation, and dentists have used them in their modern form since the early 1980s. In the last 30 years, dental implants have evolved into a very predictable and successful treatment for patients in Gasport, NY who want to replace missing teeth. Statistically, the impressive success rate of dental implants is between 97 and 99 percent, making them an excellent long-term investment.

Reasons a Dental Implant Won't Work

While dental implant failure is infrequent, certain conditions can create an environment in your mouth that's not conducive to the successful integration of your dental implant with the bone in your jaw. If you have an uncontrolled systemic disease, such as thyroid disease, diabetes, some cancers, or infections, you may not be a candidate for dental implant placement at this time.

Smoking and poor oral hygiene also put your dental implant at risk for failure. In the unlikely event that a dental implant fails, Dr. Kaplansky will remove it and replace it with another implant or suggest an alternative solution like a dental bridge.

Your Comfort Is Our Priority

During the entire procedure, your comfort is our number one priority, including the recovery process for your implant. Dr. Kaplansky and Dr. Smith use very effective local anesthetics during the placement of your implants so that you do not have any pain or discomfort.

We also offer sedative premeditation to help you relax and feel at ease during your procedure. The mild discomfort you may experience after surgery will also be controlled with prescription medications.

Following Up After Your Appointment

No! Regardless of the procedure, at no time will you leave the office without teeth. Dr. Kaplansky can make a temporary/transitional dental appliance that will make you look presentable. It will allow you to eat, talk, and use your teeth throughout the course of treatment.

What Are Temporary Crowns?

Temporary crowns look, feel, and function much like natural teeth, but they are not as durable or long-lasting as your permanent crowns will be. Temporary crowns are designed to only last for a certain amount of time, so it’s best to get your permanent crowns placed as soon as possible.

Caring for Temporary Crowns

Temporary crowns are cemented in place, but they can also easily crack or pop off if you’re not careful. To ensure your temporary crowns last until your permanent crowns are ready, avoid eating sticky or hard foods that could cause damage. However, if your temporary crown does break or pop out of place, we can easily and quickly fix it for you.

We also recommend brushing and flossing just as you would with your permanent crowns. Typically, patients only have temporary crowns for two or three weeks.

A common question that we get in the office is about bone grafting and dental implants. The only way we can answer all of your questions in detail is after your initial consultation. Utilizing our advanced in-office imaging technology, such as 3-D Computed Tomography (CBCT), Dr. Kaplansky or Dr. Smith will determine if you require a bone graft to facilitate dental implant placement. We can perform bone grafting before placing the implant, or we can perform the grafting and placement during the same session.

When Is Bone Grafting Needed?graphic of dental implant

Bone grafting is sometimes necessary to improve the results of dental implant surgery. The bone that we graft into your tooth cavity will help strengthen the area, and it gives your dental implant a more sturdy area to bond to once we place the implant. Not everyone needs this procedure, and the only way to know for sure if you will need this treatment along with your implant is to consult with your Gasport dentist.

Teeth Now®

If you live with tooth loss or are about to lose your teeth, Dentistry by Dr. Kaplansky can help you attain a permanent, full smile. Dr. Kaplansky and Dr. Smith prefer using Teeth Now for patients because of their superior design, durability, and longer lifespan, especially when compared to overdentures.

Overdentures Need Regular Replacement

Overdentures are complete removable dentures retained by dental implants. The dentures snap into place on the implant, and ideally, they should be removed after every meal for cleaning. Like other dentures, overdentures (also called “snap-on dentures”) are acrylic, so they aren’t very strong, and they are susceptible to wear.

Because each denture acts as an individual unit, the dentures have an average lifespan of five to seven years. Just like car brakes or tires, overdentures must be replaced to remain functional and attractive. Their design also makes them more prone to capturing plaque and bacteria, as well as bone loss around the implant.

Teeth Now Are Reliable and Long-Lasting!

Teeth Now are sturdy, permanent dental implants that do not require removal or replacement. Their design is far stronger and more reliable than overdentures because they are a single unit instead of several. The prosthetic teeth are directly connected to the implant, and the implant itself naturally joins the jaw bone, which prevents bone loss from occurring.

Dental implants are designed to look, function, and feel just like natural teeth so you can enjoy your life without worrying about your smile. If you are ready to take your oral health to the next level, please talk to Dr. Kaplansky or Dr. Smith about getting dental implants in Gasport, NY.

Bone & Gum Grafting

Ready to Book Your Dental Implant Consultation?

In your consultation with our team, we will be able to answer all of your questions thoroughly, and we will present all of your treatment options to you to help you make an informed decision about your smile.

We enjoy helping patients near and far, and many of our patients travel to our Gasport dental office from Lockport, Terrys Corners, Wrights Corners, Carlisle Gardens, Hartland, and Highland Park.

In our dental office, we offer both full-sized and mini implants and tailor treatment to each patient's needs and wants.

Remember, Dr. Kaplansky completed implant treatment on many patients in their 80s and even 90s. The only “regret” we routinely hear from these happy patients is, “I should've done this years ago.”

We look forward to creating a new smile for you with dental implants and mini implants!

Yes! Dental implants work well for those with diabetes, but diabetes must be controlled, or it can negatively impact the healing process. Before you undergo any treatment, we will consult with your family doctor to ensure dental implant technology is safe for you.

Types of Dental Implants

We also offer various dental implant types in our Lockport dental office, including traditional dental implants, Zygoma dental implants, and Teeth Now®.

#1 Traditional Dental Implants

Traditional dental implants mean our dentist implants a replacement root in your jaw. This root integrates with the bone to create a sturdy foundation for your replacement tooth.

#2 Zygoma Dental Implants

Zygoma dental implants are for those who have been told that dental implants are not a good fit for their tooth replacement needs. These dental implants work deeper in the bone or are angled to support your restoring tooth without the need for bone grafts or lengthy treatments.

#3 Teeth Now®

Teeth Now® helps those with significant tooth loss realize a full smile. Your Lockport implant dentist relies on four to six implants to provide you with an entire arch of new teeth.

Whether you’re looking for implant-supported dentures in the Lockport area, traditional implants, or another option, our dentist has the skills and background to restore your smile.

When you decide to replace your missing tooth, you may find that you have a couple of options. Depending on the bone structure of your jaw and how many teeth you are looking to replace, you may consider dental implants. But did you know that you can also choose to have mini-implants placed instead?

Find out the difference between dental implants and mini-implants here!

Dental Implant

A dental implant consists of a base made from titanium or another material compatible with the human body. This base is placed in the jaw's bone, and an abutment piece is used to attach a life-like crown at the gum line. The dental implant provides a strong foundation for replacement teeth, and they function, look, and feel just like a natural smile.

Mini-Implant

A mini-implant is a dental implant that is simply smaller in diameter. This can offer several advantages, including faster healing time and less time spent in surgery. This may also be a good option for patients who have less-than-ideal jaw bone health.

Long-Term Tooth Replacement in Gasport, NY

Either form of dental implant is an excellent choice for long-term tooth replacement in Gasport, NY. Implants are highly functional and comfortable, and they look just like natural teeth! Invisalign

One of the most attractive benefits of Invisalign is that the alignment trays are removable. This unique and convenient feature separates Invisalign from traditional metal braces and is ultimately why patients choose to use Invisalign in Lockport.

Invisalign Comfortably and Discreetly Straightens Teeth

We are commonly asked by our patients how often they can take out their Invisalign trays. Invisalign alignment trays are supposed to be worn for at least 22 hours each day to be effective.

However, this leaves several hours per day to take out your trays to eat and brush and floss your teeth. You should wear your trays as often as possible, but it is generally okay to remove them for a few hours for a special event, such as a wedding or photoshoot.

As your orthodontist in Lockport, we want your Invisalign alignment trays to work as effectively as possible. The trays have their best chance to work when you wear them as directed, so we ask that you wear your trays for 22 hours each day, except for special occasions.
