Dental Implant Procedure
Many of our Gasport, NY dental patients want to learn more about the dental implant placement procedure before they agree to receive dental implants.
We encourage you to learn all you can about the process and to contact us at Dentistry by Dr. Kaplansky whenever you have questions. We want all of our dental patients to make the most informed decisions possible before beginning treatment. The more you know about dental implants, the more you will come to understand why they are one of the best dental treatment options available today!
Strong Candidates for Dental Implants
The ideal candidate for implants has a good bone density in his or her jaw, has no signs of gum disease, and is in generally good dental health. If you have poor bone density, all is not lost! Dr. Kaplansky may recommend bone grafting, which can be done right here at our Gasport dental office in a separate surgery prior to implant surgery.
Any gum disease should also be treated to prepare you for implant surgery. If you currently have gum disease that is still in its early stages, we will work with you to reverse the condition before moving forward with the implant placement process. Mild gum disease can typically be reversed through diligent brushing and flossing and by visiting our dental office regularly for thorough professional cleanings.
If your gum disease is advanced, however, you may not be a strong candidate for dental implants. Advanced stages of gum disease can lead to bone or tissue loss in the mouth. If you are struggling with gum disease that is too far advanced for implants, Dr. Kaplansky will work with you to explore alternative treatment options.
For the best results and the best chance of implant success, we need to always place dental implants in sites that are healthy and free of infection.
Personalized Dental Implant Treatment Plans
We will design a treatment plan to successfully place your dental implants. Every mouth is different, which means Dr. Kaplansky takes a unique and individualized approach for every implant that he places. The general placement process, however, is the same for most patients. Read below to learn more about how your dental implant will be placed:
Placing the Dental Implant
During surgery, a titanium base will be placed in the bone of your jaw. This base is the actual “implant” portion of the treatment. Your natural bone will support the implant post and eventually heal around the metal in a process called osseointegration. This healing period typically takes a few months. During these few months, we leave the implant site alone to fully heal and we do not work on the area any further.
Once the osseointegration is done and your jawbone has fully fused to the implant, Dr. Kaplansky then places a lifelike crown on top of the implant post and above the gum line. This crown, which is typically made of porcelain, is designed to blend in perfectly with your natural teeth. The crown is the only visible portion of the entire implant. It is attached to the implant base using an abutment (attachment) piece that is hidden under the crown.
Unlike other tooth replacement options, dental implants can help prevent further bone loss. This is why dental implants are such a wonderful treatment option — they replace missing teeth while simultaneously protecting the remaining teeth. The titanium base of the implant stimulates the bone tissue to generate healthy cells in much the same way that your natural tooth roots do. Another advantage of dental implants is that they will not slip or slide in your mouth like a denture.
Mini implants are similar to regular dental implants except that they are smaller in diameter. This may be a good option if you don’t have quite enough bone remaining in the jaw to support a traditional implant or if you need to replace a very small missing tooth.
Mini implants are strong and durable and offer many of the same benefits as traditional dental implants. Advantages of mini implants include a shorter amount of time spent in surgery and faster recovery times. Our mini dental implants may be a great treatment option for you if you are in Gasport, NY.
