Professional teeth whitening produces results that over-the-counter strips and gels do not. The reasons are concentration and contact: professional gels contain higher levels of carbamide or hydrogen peroxide, and they are applied through custom trays or in-office protocols that keep the gel in contact with enamel longer and more uniformly. This practice uses KöR Deep Bleaching, a professional system designed specifically to address the two main reasons standard whitening underperforms — weak gels and saliva contamination.
Whitening is delivered by Dr. Komal Koli, DDS, MS — UCLA and Medical College of Georgia trained, with focused experience in cosmetic dentistry. Treatment begins with a comprehensive exam and custom impressions for the at-home tray phase. Patients with existing crowns, veneers, or composite bonding on visible front teeth are counseled that whitening changes the color of natural teeth but not restorations — which may require replacement to match the new shade. We evaluate all existing dental work before recommending a whitening plan so you know the full picture before you commit.
KöR gels are refrigerated from manufacture through delivery to preserve full potency at the time of use. The custom KöR Tray creates a peripheral seal against the gums and lips that blocks saliva and sulcular fluid from diluting the gel during treatment. The result is a more sustained bleaching reaction — the gel stays active for the full wearing time rather than being deactivated within minutes of contact with saliva.
Treatment begins with custom impressions. At-home tray whitening is performed nightly for two to three weeks. An optional in-office session can accelerate results. A maintenance phase with periodic at-home tray use extends longevity. Most patients achieve 8 to 16 shades lighter — and tetracycline-stained teeth, which are notoriously resistant to whitening, also respond to KöR when other systems fail.
Compared to retail products, professional whitening delivers greater shade improvement in less time, with better protection for the gum tissue (because the tray seals the gel away from soft tissue) and predictable results across the full smile (because custom trays cover every tooth uniformly, unlike strips that miss the back of the smile and cuspids). Sensitivity is managed proactively with desensitizing protocols and the right pre-treatment regimen.
Most patients with healthy teeth and gums are candidates for whitening. Whitening works best on natural tooth enamel. Patients with significant gum recession, exposed root surfaces, or severe pre-existing sensitivity should discuss their case before starting treatment. Whitening is not recommended during pregnancy.
Temporary tooth sensitivity is the most common side effect. It is typically mild, related to the cold sensation that registers more sharply on freshly whitened teeth, and resolves within a few days of completing treatment. Mild gum irritation can occur if the gel contacts the gum tissue — the custom tray is designed to minimize this. Both are well within the range of normal and not reasons to avoid the procedure.
Whitening does not damage tooth structure, enamel, or existing dental work when performed under professional supervision with the right protocols. Patients with restorations on front teeth will see those restorations stay the same shade while natural teeth lighten — which is a planning consideration, not a side effect.
