Mini dental implants are implant fixtures with a diameter of less than 3 mm — roughly half the diameter of standard implants. They were designed for situations where bone volume or width is insufficient for standard implants, or for stabilizing lower dentures in elderly patients who are not candidates for more complex surgery. They are not a budget version of standard implants. Used appropriately, they solve a specific clinical problem. Used inappropriately, they underperform.
Lower denture stabilization: The most well-established application for mini implants is attaching a lower full denture to the jaw so it doesn’t float or shift. Two to four mini implants in the anterior lower jaw provide snap-in retention for a denture, dramatically improving comfort and function for patients who cannot tolerate removable dentures and are not candidates for full-arch fixed implants.
Narrow spaces: In some patients, the gap between adjacent teeth is too narrow to accommodate a standard-diameter implant without compromising those teeth. A mini implant can fit where a standard fixture cannot.
Limited bone width: When the jaw ridge has resorbed to a width that won’t support a standard implant without significant bone grafting, mini implants may be placed in the existing narrow ridge.
Medically fragile patients: For elderly patients or those with health conditions that make longer surgery inadvisable, mini implants offer a less invasive option with a shorter procedure time.
Mini implants are not appropriate as replacements for standard implants in most adult patients with normal bone volume. The load-bearing capacity of a mini implant is lower than a standard fixture — this matters significantly for molar and premolar sites where chewing forces are highest.
Using mini implants as a cost-saving measure in cases that call for standard implants is a clinical compromise that increases the risk of implant fracture and failure over time.
| Factor | Mini Implants | Standard Implants |
|---|---|---|
| Diameter | <3 mm | 3.5–6 mm |
| Best use | Denture stabilization, narrow sites | Single tooth, bridge, full arch |
| Load capacity | Lower | Higher |
| Procedure time | Shorter | Longer |
| Evidence base | Strong for denture stabilization | Strongest for all applications |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
Mini dental implants are available at Dentistry by Dr. Kaplansky when clinically indicated. The practice also offers the full spectrum of standard implant solutions — including zygomatic implants for severe bone loss and the TeethNow full-arch system — so treatment recommendations are based on what’s best for the patient’s anatomy, not what’s available in the office.
Dr. Igor Kaplansky, DDS — Diplomate ABOI/ID, Fellow AAID/FICOI/FAGD, ZAGA Center certified — evaluates each case on its specific bone volume, tooth position, and functional requirements. If mini implants are the right choice, that recommendation comes with a clear explanation of why. If standard implants are more appropriate, that conversation happens at consultation as well.
Consultations are offered at no charge at the Gasport, NY office. Patients from Lockport, Niagara Falls, and Buffalo are welcome. Schedule a consultation to determine which implant size and system fits your situation.
