A dental exam is a systematic assessment of your oral health — teeth, gums, bite, soft tissue, and supporting bone. The cleaning, technically called a prophylaxis, removes the buildup that daily brushing and flossing cannot reach: calcified tartar and bacteria below the gumline. Together, the exam and cleaning give you a current picture of your oral health and address the most common causes of tooth decay and gum disease before they advance. The visit takes roughly forty-five minutes to an hour for most patients on a regular recall schedule.
Preventive care is the foundation of every other procedure we perform. Patients who keep a consistent recall schedule rarely need the more involved restorative work — fillings, root canals, extractions — that becomes necessary when small problems are left to grow. Two cleanings per year is the standard recommendation for most adults. Patients with active gum disease, heavy tartar buildup, smoking history, diabetes, or implant restorations are typically seen three to four times per year on a periodontal maintenance schedule that is longer and more involved than a standard prophylaxis. The right recall interval is set based on your individual risk profile, not a one-size-fits-all schedule.
General and preventive care at this practice is provided by Dr. Komal Koli, DDS, MS — UCLA School of Dentistry and Medical College of Georgia trained, with experience across general, cosmetic, and pediatric dentistry. She brings a careful, evidence-based approach to every visit. The team uses low-radiation digital sensors for X-rays and an ultrasonic scaler in combination with hand instruments for cleaning. Sharpened, properly maintained instruments and good technique matter more than any single piece of equipment in producing a thorough, comfortable cleaning.

If you have not seen a dentist in more than a year, a comprehensive new-patient exam is appropriate as a first visit rather than jumping straight to a cleaning. This includes a full-mouth series of X-rays, a periodontal evaluation to measure pocket depths around every tooth, an oral cancer screening, photographs where helpful, and a discussion of any findings before any treatment is scheduled. We do not recommend treatment without first presenting the diagnostic information that supports it. If a cleaning alone is appropriate, that is what we do. If something deeper is going on, you will know about it before you are asked to make a decision.
Each preventive visit follows a consistent sequence. Bitewing X-rays show cavities between teeth and early bone changes that are not visible to the eye. A full-mouth series is taken at longer intervals — typically every three to five years for patients at average risk, more frequently for patients with active disease. The hygienist then performs a periodontal screening, probing around each tooth to measure the depth of gum pockets. Pockets of one to three millimeters are healthy. Pockets of four millimeters or deeper indicate active gum disease that may require treatment beyond a routine cleaning. Bleeding on probing is recorded as a marker of inflammation.
The professional cleaning then removes tartar and plaque from all tooth surfaces, including below the gumline along the entire arch. Polishing removes surface stain from coffee, tea, tobacco, and other dietary sources. Fluoride application is offered to patients at elevated decay risk. For patients with active periodontal disease, a scaling and root planing procedure is recommended at a separate visit under local anesthesia — a routine cleaning is not adequate for periodontitis and treating it as such allows the disease to progress.
The exam is the final step. The dentist reviews the X-rays, checks every tooth surface for decay, evaluates how the upper and lower teeth come together, looks for cracks and signs of grinding, and screens the soft tissue and lymph nodes for signs of oral cancer. Any findings and recommended treatment are presented before you leave, with photographs and X-ray images on screen so you can see what the dentist is describing. You decide what to schedule and when.
Most dental PPO plans cover two preventive visits per year at 100 percent — no copay and no deductible. This typically includes the exam, the X-rays appropriate for your recall schedule, and the professional cleaning. We verify your specific benefits before your appointment so there are no surprises at checkout, and we explain the difference between in-network and out-of-network coverage if that applies to you. We accept Delta Dental, MetLife, Aetna, United Concordia, Cigna, and most major PPO plans. The full insurance carrier list is on our financial information page; call the office if your specific plan is not listed and we will look it up while you are on the phone.
For procedures beyond standard preventive care — such as scaling and root planing, sealants on adult teeth, or restorative work — coverage varies by plan and procedure. Our team submits pre-authorization requests when needed so you know the patient portion before scheduling. We also offer CareCredit and in-house financing for patients without dental insurance, for treatment that exceeds annual maximums, or for patients who simply prefer to pay over time. Cost should not be the reason you do not get the care you need.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first dental visit by age one, or within six months of the first tooth erupting — whichever comes first. Early visits are short, low-key, and primarily about establishing comfort with the dental setting, reviewing oral hygiene with parents, and identifying any developmental concerns early. Dr. Koli has experience treating younger patients, and the office sees families across multiple generations. We make the visit pediatric-friendly without compromising on the clinical content of the exam.
For school-age children, sealants on permanent molars are a high-value preventive measure. A sealant is a thin protective resin painted into the deep grooves of the chewing surface, where toothbrush bristles cannot reach. Sealants reduce molar cavities significantly during the cavity-prone years of childhood and adolescence and are routinely covered by pediatric dental benefits. Fluoride varnish at recall visits is another evidence-based preventive measure for pediatric patients.
A long gap between visits is common — and not a reason to avoid coming back. We see new patients who have not been to a dentist in five, ten, or twenty years. There is no judgment at the new-patient visit. We assess what is going on, prioritize what needs immediate attention versus what can wait, and present a plan that fits your situation and budget. Patients who are anxious about dental visits can ask about sedation options — nitrous oxide, oral sedation, or IV sedation — at the consultation. Sedation is available for routine appointments, not just surgery.
If your reason for delayed care is fear of cost, we discuss financial options upfront before any treatment is scheduled — insurance verification, CareCredit, and in-house financing. The goal is to make sure cost is not what keeps you from getting the care you need. If your reason is fear of the dental visit itself, we go at your pace. Many patients who came in dreading the appointment leave saying it was easier than they expected.
Patients always see the same provider they consulted with. Dr. Koli handles your general and preventive care. Dr. Kaplansky handles implant surgery. No rotating associates. This continuity matters for catching small changes in oral health over time — the kind of pattern recognition that requires familiarity with a patient's baseline. When the same clinician sees you year after year, subtle shifts in gum architecture, tooth wear, or bite patterns are noticed early rather than missed.
If preventive care reveals issues that benefit from implant evaluation — a failing bridge, a loose denture, an unrestorable tooth, or a longstanding gap that has caused neighboring teeth to shift — Dr. Kaplansky is in-house. He brings Diplomate-level board certification in oral implantology and 30+ years placing dental implants. Implants are often a better long-term alternative for tooth replacement compared to bridges or removable partials; ask about candidacy at consultation. A CBCT scan is part of every implant evaluation to assess bone volume and plan placement digitally before any surgery is performed.
