Sedation Dentistry in Gasport, NY — Nitrous, Oral, and IV Sedation

Sedation Dentistry in Gasport, NY

Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons patients avoid necessary care. Many of our implant and restorative patients have been putting off treatment for years — not because they weren't ready, but because the prospect of a multi-hour procedure was too much without support. Sedation dentistry does not change the procedure. It changes your experience of it. For patients who would otherwise decline surgery or routine dental care because of fear, sedation is the bridge between avoidance and treatment.

We will not push you toward a sedation level you do not want. But we will make sure you understand what each option feels like — so you can make a choice that allows you to receive the care you need. The decision is made at the consultation, with accurate information about what each level feels like, costs, and requires in terms of preparation and recovery. Sedation is available for any procedure at this practice, not just implant surgery.

We Customize Your Dental Treatment

No two patients arrive with the same history or the same comfort level. Some patients have a specific past dental experience that left them anxious. Others have a generalized fear of needles or of being in a clinical environment. A subset of patients are not particularly anxious but choose sedation for a long procedure simply because they would rather not be aware of it. All of these are valid reasons to use sedation, and we tailor the level to the patient rather than applying a default.

The consultation includes a medical history review, a current medication list, and a discussion of any health conditions that could affect sedation candidacy — including respiratory disease, cardiovascular conditions, pregnancy, sleep apnea, and specific medication interactions. We are honest if sedation at the requested level is not appropriate; we are equally honest when a deeper level is more comfortable and entirely safe.

Reasons to Choose Sedation Dentistry

Common reasons patients request sedation include significant dental anxiety, a sensitive gag reflex, difficulty remaining still for long periods, complex procedures expected to take more than an hour or two, prior traumatic dental experiences, and personal preference. Sedation also allows multiple procedures to be combined into a single visit, which reduces total chair time and recovery — patients with significant treatment plans often appreciate this efficiency.

For full-arch implant surgery — whether TeethNow or zygomatic implants — IV sedation is standard. The procedures are still performed under local anesthesia regardless of sedation level, meaning you are fully numb. IV sedation adds a layer of awareness reduction on top of the numbness. Most patients have very little or no memory of the procedure afterward.

Types of Sedation Dentistry We Offer

Three levels of sedation are available at this practice, each with a different mechanism and recovery profile. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is the lightest. It is inhaled through a nasal mask, produces mild relaxation within minutes, and reverses within minutes of stopping the gas. You remain fully aware and responsive, can communicate with the team, and feel calm rather than tense. Patients who received only nitrous can drive themselves home.

Best for: mild anxiety, shorter procedures, patients who need to drive themselves.

Nitrous oxide is the most commonly requested sedation level for routine restorative work — fillings, crowns, simple extractions — where patients want a baseline level of relaxation but do not need or want anything stronger. It is well tolerated, fully reversible, and the option many patients choose once they understand the difference between the levels.

Oral Sedation

A prescription tablet is taken approximately one hour before the appointment. By the time you are in the chair, you feel deeply relaxed and often drowsy. Most patients remain conscious but are in a detached, low-anxiety state and remember little of the procedure afterward. The effects persist for several hours after the appointment, so a driver is required to bring you home and remain with you until the sedation has fully worn off.

Best for: moderate anxiety, longer procedures, patients who want to remember little of the treatment but do not need or want IV-level sedation.

Oral sedation is the middle option for patients whose anxiety is too high for nitrous alone but who do not require the depth of IV. It is convenient — a tablet taken before the visit — and produces consistent results in most patients. Pre-operative instructions and post-operative recovery guidelines are reviewed before the appointment so you know exactly what to expect on the day.

Intravenous Sedation

IV sedation is administered intravenously and produces the deepest level of in-office sedation available without general anesthesia. Patients are often unaware of the procedure as it occurs. Vital signs — oxygen saturation, heart rate, blood pressure — are monitored continuously throughout. Recovery takes place in the office before the patient is discharged to a driver. Most patients describe the experience as similar to falling asleep and waking up to find the procedure done.

Best for: significant anxiety, complex procedures, full-arch implant surgery including TeethNow and zygomatic implant cases. IV sedation requires advanced training and certification beyond general dentistry. At this practice, sedation is administered and monitored by trained professionals throughout the procedure.

General anesthesia — full unconsciousness — is not the same as IV sedation and is not performed in this office setting. Procedures that require general anesthesia are referred to an oral surgery facility with the appropriate hospital privileges.

IV sedation has an excellent safety record when administered by trained professionals with continuous monitoring. The most common side effect is a few hours of drowsiness and mild fatigue on the day of the procedure. Most patients are back to normal activities the following day. The depth of sedation can be adjusted in real time during the procedure based on patient comfort, which is one of the practical advantages of IV over oral sedation.

We Can Help Guide You

Dr. Igor Kaplansky personally discusses sedation options with every surgical patient. The decision is yours — made with accurate information about what each level feels like, costs, and requires in terms of preparation. Most dental insurance plans do not cover sedation for elective purposes, but coverage for surgical procedures varies; we verify your specific benefits before the appointment.

Preparation depends on the sedation level. For oral and IV sedation: no eating or drinking for at least six hours before the appointment (NPO protocol). Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Arrange for a driver. Do not take additional sedatives or opioids before the appointment unless instructed. Bring a current list of all medications. Specific pre-operative instructions will be provided when you schedule.
