Dentures & Partials in Gasport, NY — Plus Implant-Supported Alternatives

Dentures and Partials in Gasport, NY

A full denture replaces all teeth in an arch. It rests on the gum tissue and, for the upper arch, uses suction against the palate for retention. The lower denture relies only on the gum surface and is inherently less stable. A partial denture replaces one or more missing teeth when other natural teeth remain. Metal clasps attach to adjacent natural teeth to hold the partial in place. Partials are removable and require cleaning daily outside the mouth.

Both full and partial dentures are less stable than fixed restorations. Diet limitations, adhesive use, and progressive bone loss under the denture are long-term considerations that fixed implant solutions address directly. We discuss those trade-offs openly at the consultation rather than steering you to one option. Some patients are well-served by conventional dentures; others are better candidates for implant-supported alternatives. The right answer depends on bone volume, budget, and what matters most to you in daily function.

Implants are often a better long-term alternative — ask about candidacy at consultation. Dr. Igor Kaplansky brings Diplomate ABOI/ID board certification — held by fewer than 600 dentists in the United States — and 30+ years placing dental implants. A CBCT scan is part of every implant evaluation to assess bone volume and plan placement. For patients with severely resorbed upper-jaw bone, zygomatic implants anchor in the cheekbone and avoid the need for bone grafting — Dr. Kaplansky is ZAGA Center Certified and co-authored the zygomatic implant clinical textbook.

Types of Dentures and Implant-Supported Alternatives

Conventional full dentures are removable prosthetics that rest on the gum tissue. They are the lowest-cost full-mouth tooth replacement, and for some patients — particularly those with limited bone volume who are not interested in or candidates for implants — they are the appropriate choice. New conventional dentures often feel bulky or loose until the oral muscles adapt, which can take several weeks. Sore spots are common and addressed with adjustments at follow-up visits.

Partial dentures replace one or more missing teeth when some natural teeth remain. They typically use metal clasps that attach to existing teeth for retention. Partials are removable and need to be taken out and cleaned daily. The clasps that retain a partial can wear the natural teeth they attach to over time — a long-term consideration for patients who may want to preserve those teeth.

Implant-supported overdentures use two to four dental implants placed in the jaw to provide anchors that snap or lock a denture in place. Unlike a conventional denture, an overdenture does not rely on adhesive or suction. It stays stable during eating and speaking and is removed only for cleaning. Implants also stimulate the jawbone, slowing the bone resorption that inevitably occurs under a conventional denture. Patients who have worn conventional dentures for years often find their denture no longer fits well — because the underlying bone has shrunk. Implants halt that progression.

For patients who want a fully fixed, non-removable solution, the TeethNow system provides permanent zirconia teeth — zirconia, not acrylic — anchored to four to six implants per arch. Pre-designed healing teeth are delivered the day after surgery; permanent zirconia teeth at 4 to 5 months. TeethNow is the practice's branded full-arch zirconia system and the alternative to chain-provider acrylic options. Pricing is $24,000 to $38,000 per arch.

What to Expect with Conventional Dentures

The conventional denture process typically takes four to six weeks and involves several appointments. The first visit captures impressions and a bite record. A wax try-in follows, allowing the patient to evaluate fit and aesthetics before the final denture is processed. The finished denture is delivered and adjusted. Follow-up adjustments over the next few weeks address sore spots as the soft tissue adapts. Most patients need at least one or two adjustment visits after delivery.

Care is straightforward: remove the denture nightly to allow the gum tissue to rest, clean the denture with a soft brush and denture-safe cleaner (not regular toothpaste, which is abrasive), and store it in water or denture solution overnight. A loose denture warrants a relining appointment rather than increasing reliance on adhesive — adhesive is a short-term fix, not a substitute for a properly-fitting prosthesis.

Patients who currently wear conventional dentures and find them unstable may be candidates for implant placement to convert to an overdenture later. The implant consultation includes a CBCT scan to assess bone volume and determine how many implants are feasible.
